She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. (Proverbs 31:26, KJV)
Just the other night, as I was trying to get my 3-month-old son to sleep (and had nearly succeeded), his 5-year-old sister walked into the family room and sat on the couch beside me. “What are you doing up?” I asked. She attempted to answer me with tears and nonsensical babblings, but finally was able to manage, “I just want to spend some time with you. I’ll sit beside you and keep you company.”
Now, it was very nearly 10 o’clock at night. The infant in my arms was finally asleep and I was desperate for this child to go back to bed, so I could have a few moments to myself. Just as I was opening my mouth to send her away, my mouth snapped shut. The Holy Spirit instructed me to look closely at my eldest child. What I had been ready to dismiss as stalling tactics and an attempt to stay up late was something else entirely. She needed me. Needed to be seen, heard, and considered. And I needed to recognize and respond to this need. If I had selfishly overridden that urging of the Spirit and sent my child – tears and all – back to bed, I would have missed the opportunity to minister to her.
That night, after I laid my baby down in his crib, my daughter shadowed my every step. She stayed right beside me as I changed the sheets on my bed, got ready for bed, and checked on her sleeping siblings. Her father came upstairs just as she and I were crawling into our big bed. For several minutes, the three of us talked, touched, smiled, and giggled softly before we turned down the covers and turned in. The last thing I heard before I fell asleep was my sweet child’s satisfied sigh. And I slept easy knowing that God had caused her heart to be comforted and her need met.
If we pay close attention and are patient, we can learn so much on this mothering journey. With vision, intent, love, and wisdom, we will accomplish much for the kingdom to the Glory of God in the lives of our children.
