Sister Friends, 

Being a mother is wondrous – exhilarating and exhausting! The Lord laid on my heart these words of encouragement and exhortation for the mothers we are, for the mothers we know, and for the mothers who will be. I pray these “Mothers Are” meditations are a blessing to you. Please feel free to share them if you wish. 

But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight. Psalm 16:3 KJV

The blessings of the Lord make rich and add no sorrow! Lord, thank you for the blessings that are our children.

May the Lord bless, cover, keep and protect you.

Where there is no vision, the people perish. Proverbs 29:18 KJV

 I was a pretty good kid. I believe my mother will confirm this. I did my homework. Obeyed my teachers and got decent grades. For the most part, I did what I was told. From elementary school to high school graduation, I did very little to frighten, aggravate, or antagonize the adults in my life
and then I went to college – where I promptly lost my ever-loving mind! I skipped classes, squandered money, stayed out late, drank, partied, and was promiscuous. Where was that diligent and obedient child of my formative years? She was still there, but she had no vision, so she got lost when she left home and was on her way to hell.

 Without dispute, my mother loves me. However, she did not have a vision for my life. This is not to say that she had no expectations. That she did – expressed and implied. She expected me to obey her and the adults in my life. She expected me to attend school and perform well. She expected me to not get pregnant before graduating from college. She expected me to understand that a hard head makes for a soft behind! She let many of her expectations be known and so I was able to conform, but she did not have a vision. 

 So what’s the difference between an expectation and a vision? 

Expect means to “await” or look forward to the coming or occurrence of [a thing]. It also means to consider probable or certain, reasonable, due or necessary. A vision is the act or power of anticipating that which will or may come to be. 

Compared to a vision, an expectation is limited and passive. Expectations may be off-base or have no basis. Expectations are general and sometimes poorly applied. On the contrary, a vision is a unique, life map created by seeking the mind of God. Setting a vision for your child’s life is the difference between life and death. Think about it like this – you are a line of defense in your child’s life. And a vision is a powerful weapon against the wiles of the enemy. 

Visionaries are proactive. In advance of the unknown and unexpected, they seek God for wisdom, guidance, and instruction. If you haven’t already, consult with the Lord about the vision for your child’s life. When you receive it, talk with your child(ren) about it and engage their efforts in bringing it to pass!
