Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:6, NAS)
One night, on the way home from an evening out, my husband and I were listening to Pastor Charles Stanley on the radio. That night he was sharing a memory of how his mother prayed faithfully by his bedside every night until he left home for college. According to Pastor Stanley, in that simple act, his mother modeled for him both the importance of having a prayer life and also showed him how important he was to her. It takes a powerful discipline and willing sacrifice to pray every night with your child.
At its simplest, prayer is communicating with God. It is a means of finding our way into the very presence of God. Through prayer, we have the opportunity to hear from the Lord – receiving instruction, encouragement, direction, and correction. Who better to tell you about the intricacies of your child and what they need most than their Creator? Who better to reveal your strengths, and teach you how to use them? Who better to reveal your limitations, and teach you how to overcome them?
I have a sister who has a room in her house devoted to prayer and meditation. That may or may not be feasible for you, but believe me, the couch, bed, or kitchen table will do just as well! Prayer can happen at any time of the day and in any place, but I am finding that dialogue with God happens best when I create the time for those conversations. It’s a good idea to determine whether or not you need to schedule time in your day for dedicated prayer.
Takeaways:
Application: Let’s face it. We love our children, but we don’t always know what they need. That fact alone causes high anxiety in many parents. But there is a limit to what we can know about them. After all, they are individuals in their own right. And in addition to helping maintain their good health and hygiene, their spiritual and emotional wellbeing has been placed under our care as well.
As we start this brand new year, consider want you want from the Lord for your children. What do they need? Ask, and you shall receive! Remember that the Lord has promised, “…you will receive everything you ask for in prayer, no matter what it is, provided you have trust.” (Matt 21:22 CJB)
Affirmation: Lord, help me to diligently seek you in prayer, so that I may better steward my children.
