Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Matthew 5:9, KJV)
Ok, so there was chaos in the house. Clothes overflowing in the laundry room, toys strewn about the den, dishes in the kitchen sink, crayons on the couch, and coloring books on the coffee table. And in the midst of all this mess, there were two adults and three children seemingly spoiling for a fight because someone had to take the blame for all this mess.
Everyone was being affected by the confusion in the house. The disorder and lack of organization was negatively impacting our attitudes and our efforts at communication. I would like to say that I was like Jesus in the boat in the midst of the storm, but I was not. I added to the mayhem by giving my tongue more freedom than what is seemly or expedient.
As women, what we say and how we behave can really set the tone for the entire house. In the story of Jesus in the midst of the storm which is recounted in Mark chapter 4, the Bible relates that Jesus was asleep on a pillow while the winds and waves beat furiously against the boat. His actions alone should have communicated to the disciples that there was no need for panic. Nevertheless, they woke him up to communicate their fear of what they believed to be their impending death. And when he awoke, instead of raising his voice with theirs in fear, he rebuked the storm and said, “Peace, be still.”
Even though the disciples missed the significance of his example, Jesus had already set the tone for the boat by remaining asleep in the midst of the storm. So when his example didn’t suffice, he awoke and used his tongue to, quite literally, make peace.
Whether we realize it or not, our children are as much impacted by the confusion in our lives as we are. Whether it is financial lack, marital discord, physical ailments, or spiritual unrest our response to the challenges will help set the tone for how our children respond. Why not make an effort to act as Christ did and create an atmosphere of peace?
Blessed are the peacemakers, and rightly so, because they bring order to disorder and harmony to chaos.
