If you want your life to have impact, focus it! Stop dabbling. Stop trying to do it all. Do less. Prune away even good activities and do only that which matters most. Never confuse activity with productivity. You can be busy without a purpose, but whatās the point?
ā The Purpose-Driven Life, Rick Warren
Intent ā having the mind and will focused on a specific purpose
Thereās a popular insurance commercial on television with the tag line, āLife comes at you fast.ā These words were never as true as they are in the world we live in now. A world that is changing constantly. People move at a frantic pace. Most times itās easy to see why the world calls its pursuits a rat race.
Today, many mothers are working women ā entrepreneurs and employees. They might be responsible for charting the course of an entire company, managing a large staff, or working difficult shifts that include nights and weekends. Add to this the responsibility of meeting the needs of one child or multiple children, and perhaps a husband, and you can see where difficulties might arise.
Balancing the dynamics of work and family isnāt easy. When you take into consideration the fact that in Godās perfect plan there would be no single moms (unless caused by the death of a husband), or situations in which the woman was required to work outside the home, you can see how things have really gotten off course. But there is nothing you can do at the office which would have greater impact in this world than raising your child in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. And because we live in the world, constantly being tempted by the promise of money and accolades, itās essential that mothers be intentional.
Activities donāt create purposeful children; parents who are active in their childrenās lives do. It doesnāt matter how many dance classes, athletic, cultural, or recreational activities you allow your children to participate in. None of these things will substitute for you spending time with your children.
If God blessed you with children, there is an expectation that you will employ the gifts and talents Heās given you to steward them effectively. He wants you to use the instructions provided in His word to present to Him creations that are willing and able to glorify their creator. This is no easy feat. Just as with good health, you get out what you put in. And the assignment would be nigh impossible to accomplish without having the mind and will focused on the task.
Takeaways:
Application: This week, consider your life. How many balls do you have in the air? How is your juggling act affecting your children? Are your gifts and talents only benefiting the world? Do your children know God by your example, explicit instruction, by happenstance, or not at all?
Affirmation: Lord God, I may be in danger of trying to do too much. Search my heart, Heavenly Father, and show me anything there that is not like you. Help me to correctly prioritize the things in my life and to parent my children with greater intent.
