Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age , because she judged him faithful who had promised. (Hebrews 11:11, KJV)
I love talking with my grandmother. I love to hear her testimony of how she came to Christ, and how her life changed as she matured in the faith. I especially love to hear the story of how my grandparents met. As she tells it, my grandmother’s words take shape in my mind until I can almost see the dusty road and fields of crops. It’s a romantic and nostalgic tale that led to 57 years of holy matrimony from which eight children were produced.
Out of her eight children, Grandma tells of how three of them were “devils” – just really disobedient and truant children! She said she could hardly sleep from fear and worry for those children. She spoke of the many prayers she sent up for the lives of those three, and how finally she turned over that burden to the Lord. For her efforts, she received a conditional promise from the Lord. He told her that if she lived right [before Him] that he would bless her entire family – all the fruit of her womb – to be saved and to prosper.
How wonderful it must have been for her to hear those words of promise from the living God! But every promise of God requires a faith response. For even after receiving that promise, her children, her children’s children, and even their children still find themselves from time to time in unfortunate circumstances. Even so, my grandmother remembers that God is faithful to do “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” And so her life is one of prayer and exhortation, and great biblical acumen with practical application. Over the years, my grandmother has shared her faith, wisdom, and life experiences with all of us children. She lives the word daily for all of us to see – a faithful response to God’s promise of salvation and favor for her family.

Application: What do you believe God for in the lives of your children? Acts 2:39 reads “For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Yet before we receive the promise, we are instructed in Acts 2:38 to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and to receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. Extraordinary favor requires extraordinary faith!
Affirmation: Father God, I know that you can and believe that you will fulfill your every promise concerning the lives of my children. Help me then, Lord, to be a faithful hearer and doer of your word.
