It started with a sore throat and cough on a Sunday night. By Monday, I was very sick. It didn’t take long for us to understand it was the flu. I was feverish, chills and all, and my entire body hurt -including the bottom of my feet and my fingertips. When I spoke, my sore throat had me sounding like a cartoon villain or a comical seductress. If it hadn’t hurt so much, I probably would have laughed. My chest felt tight, as though someone had put a cement block on it. My back ached and it hurt to breathe.

The Alka Seltzer worked the best. Even though it was disgusting, once ingested it got right to work. I could feel the effervescent liquid bubbling its way through my respiratory system and rolling over my sore muscles. My fever even submitted to its influence for a time.My husband went to the pharmacy and brought back Mucinex. For me, Mucinex is effective but undesirable. The side effects are the worst. I took two Mucinex and was almost immediately down for the night, but when I woke, my nasal congestion was worse and the right side of my head felt heavier than the left.

Of course, I prayed on my sick bed, and because my illness occurred during a time of fasting, my conversations with the Lord were rich and satisfying. I did not ask why he had allowed my illness, but rather spent time thanking him for the support of friends and family members who reached out through prayers, texts, and phone calls to express their concern for my well-being. I thanked him for the grace with which He gifted myfamily to do without me.

At the height of my illness, my husband stepped up in a way I’ve never before experienced. He handled my responsibilities as well as his own without complaining or fussing at the children. From my sick room, between rolling boutsof consciousness, I could hear our children working and playing collaboratively. Every so often they would stand in the doorway to ask how I was feeling and if I needed anything -just as they saw their father doing.

So while I am still recovering, and without adult help now because my husband went back to work, my spirit is rejoicing. The Lord allowed me time to be reminded not only of His loving-kindness but to see Him at work in my husband and children. And because my illness required me to be still, I was able to clearly see that I am surrounded by love and sustained by divine provision. Thank you, Lord
